The development of Bhutan’s first modern infrastructure began in the 1960s, when the first road was built connecting the capital city Thimphu with the border town of Phuntsholing. Since then, Bhutan started moving towards a more market-based economy, setting in motion its journey towards modernization.

Several economic activities took place in the country and the construction industry was a direct result of the need to build infrastructures that would contribute to the goal of economic self reliance.

It was during this important era in Bhutan’s modern history that one of the founders of Yarkay Group- Mr. Omtay Penjor ventured into the construction business at an early age thus becoming a pioneer in the industry. He built the road between Lobeysa to Punakha in 1970, which is still used today and stands testimony of the quality of work done.

With the economy gaining pace, the company for the first time started off building micro hydro projects across the country. During the 80s and 90s, it had carried major construction works for 4 (four) micro hydro projects in Thinleygang, Tingtibi, Dagana, and Rangjung. Besides the mini power plants, the company also constructed various structures such as hospitals, roads, infrastructure and housing projects.

One of the notable projects we undertook in the year 1993 was the construction of Rangjung Mini-Hydro power Project in the east, which was funded by the Government of Austria. This project was unique because it involved every aspect of a hydropower project, beginning from intake, desiltation chamber, penstock, head race tunnel and power house

The company carried out construction works worth Nu.760 million for the project. This is one of the biggest single contract package ever awarded to a private Bhutanese company in the hydro power sector.

Today, with over 40 years of proven experience and reliability, the company holds a prestigious position among Bhutanese contractors registered under ‘Large’ category by the Construction Development Board. Driven by a sense of excellence and quality the company received numerous credit certifications from the Government and other reputed agencies for outstanding performance and timely completion of projects.

One of the landmark structure constructed by Yarkay in Thimphu is the Minister’s Enclave, which is the official residence of Bhutan’s Prime Ministers and cabinet ministers. Other important works constructed to name a few include the Bhutan Power Corporation Corporate Office Complex and The National Pension and Provident Fund Corporate Office in the capital Thimphu. The company has constructed the largest hotel in the country located in the center of Thimphu. Today, Yarkay Construction continues to grow with the changing needs of the economy.
