In 1984, Yarkay Group established a small retail outlet in Phuentsholing selling foreign goods including, clothes, shoes, belts and other garments. Being the first foreign goods shop in the country, it became extremely popular among many Bhutanese as well as Indians living across the border.
Subsequently, the shop began to cater to a growing demand for traditional Bhutanese songs by recording and selling music cassettes. This was immensely popular due to their rarity during the 1980s.
During the same time, due to an increase in construction activity in the country, Yarkay Group also established an outlet to supply construction materials to various businesses across the country. All of these initiatives encouraged many other Bhutanese to venture in the business.
Today from humble beginnings, Yarkay Group has established partnership and associations with reputed international companies.
The company is the authorized channel partner of General Electric International Inc, USA. Yarkay Group has also setup Bauer Bhutan, an FDI venture with Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany who is a world wide leading special foundation contractor who specializes in the manufacture of complex excavation and vertical seals. Under this partnership, Yarkay and Bauer AG will take up specialized construction works in the country.
