In 1984, Yarkay Group established a small retail outlet in Phuentsholing selling foreign goods including, clothes, shoes, belts and other garments. Being the first foreign goods shop in the country, it became extremely popular among many Bhutanese as well as Indians living across the border.
Subsequently, the shop began to cater to a growing demand for traditional Bhutanese songs by recording and selling music cassettes. This was immensely popular due to their rarity during the 1980s.
During the same time, due to an increase in construction activity in the country, Yarkay Group also established an outlet to supply construction materials to various businesses across the country. All of these initiatives encouraged many other Bhutanese to venture in the business.
Today from humble beginnings, Yarkay Group has established partnerships and associations with reputed international companies.
General Electric International Inc., USA
The company is the Authorized Channel Partner of General Electric International Inc, USA, for supply of hydropower products within Bhutan.
Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, Germany
BAUER is a leader in specialist foundation engineering works as well as in the development and manufacture of related machinery for this dynamic market. Yarkay has formed a Joint Venture in the name of Bauer Bhutan Private Limited in 2021 for partnering in the upcoming infrastructure projects in the country.
The company is currently in talks with DMR Engineering from India for setting up a JV Company offering Consultancy Services in hydro power and engineering services.
